If you meet our high standards during this introductory period we will be happy to make you a full member of our professional team. At all stages we will want to work with you to both mentor and encourage you to achieve your potential as a professional carer.

Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about us that may help you.

Why should I choose to work for Devon Home Care instead of any other care organisation?

Because we are one of the most highly regarded care providers in Devon, and because we pay well and care for our staff. We believe we cannot expect you to care for our clients if we don’t care for you. Most of our care staff have been with us for many years but we offer a warm welcome to newcomers so that you would soon become a respected and valued member of our team.  We should know that we are not an agency, we are a local private company employing local people that has been in business for more than 20 years. Our staff are all employees with the full rights and benefits that come with working for a long-established and respected employer that cares for its staff as well as its clients.

What sort of work would I be expected to do?

Our work is providing care for those unable to fully care for themselves.  Such care can be both personal care such as helping people wash, dress and maintain their independence, or practical care such as shopping, preparing a meal or helping with tasks around the house.  Each client is different and one of the most attractive parts of the job is the sheer variety of work we do – but most especially its the pleasure gained from providing help, comfort and support for those who need it most.

What are the pay and conditions like?

Quite simply the best.  We have always paid well above the living wage, and we believe that we among the best paying employers, if not the best, for care staff in our locality.  We also pay bonuses at least twice a year based on our performance as a company, company cars or payment towards the use of your own car, holiday pay, uniforms, protective clothing and all the equipment or material you will need to enable you to provide the best care possible.  Where conditions are concerned we will also provide you with a Carers Handbook which sets out your conditions of employment and all you will need to know about our policies and procedures, including an example of the Contract of Employment you will need to sign.

Would I be trained and get qualifications?

Yes you would. From initial induction training, through training with a colleague to formal NVQ qualifications and beyond as you work with your own group of clients. And of course, we wouldn’t expect you to pay for this, rather you will be paid as normal when you are training, provided you complete the course and remain with us to put your new skills and qualifications to work for us.

Can I work flexible hours?

Another yes.  In fact, most of our teamwork flexible hours, and their pay is based on the number of hours they work.  In that way you have control of the amount you earn, remembering that we also pay extra for weekend and bank holiday working.  When you are suitably trained and ready, a member of our Care Management staff will discuss the individual clients we will allocate to you and agree the hours to be worked accordingly.

Do you provide uniforms and protective clothing?

Yes we do, and we don’t expect you to pay for them either. In addition, you will be provided with an identity badge with photograph which you will be expected to have on show and available to see at all times when working for us.

What about cars and petrol costs?

We take care of both for you.  Because we provide care in the client’s own home, we will either provide you with a company car or, if you use your own, we will pay a mileage allowance for the miles you travel on our behalf. We will expect you to always keep your vehicle in good order and of course to always drive within the law.  If you have a company car, you will be allowed to use it for your own private use within the UK as well.  Where fuel costs are concerned, we monitor costs-at-the-pump and adjust our payments in line with HMRC guidelines as appropriate.
